Animals come first at Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, which works to improve factory farming practices and raise public awareness of animal cruelty. “We first started visiting slaughterhouses in 1986 and found sick and injured animals simply abandoned,” says founder Gene Baur. “We started Farm Sanctuary to give animals a happier, healthier home and life—and make the world a better place.” Today, hundreds of rescued cows, chickens, goats, pigs, and other critters take refuge in shelters in New York and California. Here’s how to help animals no matter where you live:

  • Opt for as many meat-free meals as your family can…whether that means veggie lunches during the week or observing Meatless Mondays.
  • When you do purchase meat…buy it from a local farmer, and ask for a description of where and how the animals live, and whether they’re slaughtered humanely (read: as quickly and painlessly as possible).
  • If you do buy meat or other animal products in the grocery store…check for the “certified humane raised and handled” label to ensure that the product meets the standards of the nonprofit Humane Farm Animal Care, which requires, among other things, that animals be fed nutritious diets and slaughtered by trained personnel.
