Now that the cold weather has fully set in, your family can stay toasty and save energy—without spending a fortune. Laura Kischitz, co-founder of Sustainable Life Solutions, an energy efficiency consulting company, shows you how with these simple tips:
Warm your windows
Cold air trying to come in and warm air trying to get out bounce off thermal curtains’ reflective Mylar material. Find them at most places that sell curtains, or make your own by surrounding a layer of Mylar with insulating fabrics.
Dodge the draft
Fill old socks with dried grains. Lay them along the bottom edges of windows and doors to prevent warm air from slipping out and cold air from seeping in.
Wrap it up
Shroud water heaters that are more than 10 years old in an insulating blanket (available at hardware stores) to keep your water warmer. That way, you wont have to waste the extra energy needed to heat colder water for your showers.
