2010 Grand Prize winner: Lily Phipps 

Lily might only be in middle school, but she’s practically a pro at whipping up fantastic desserts: Her apple pie recipe earned first place in a local contest (against adults!), and she’s also won prizes in other contests for top-notch treats like strawberry cream cookie bars. “I really have a sweet tooth!” she says.

Lily learned her way around the kitchen at her mother’s and grandmother’s sides, and both of them played a part in helping her win KIWI’s Next Great Young Chef  when she was only 9 (and her grand prize of $2,500!). “My mom asked me, ‘What would you make with rice, chocolate, and vanilla?’ and I said, ‘Rice pudding!’ I never made it before, so my grandmother told me how rice pudding is usually made. Then I came up with my own recipe.”

What does this kid chef when she’s not cooking? In her free time, Lily likes to swim, sail, and play basketball and softball. “But I really love to cook,” she says.
