As part of National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day, KIWI magazine gives away three $1,000 grants from the Whole Kids Foundation to help participating schools improve their lunch program.
Edison Middle School
Wheaton, Illinois
Only one type of drink is ever offered to students at this middle school: bottled water. There isn’t a sugary soda or juice in sight! With the help of the grant, Edison’s students planned to bring more local food into the lunch room.
La Costa Heights Elementary School
Carlsbad, California
This lunch program gets much of its food from school gardens that are maintained by the students. Plus, to help curb food waste (and maintain the gardens), the district launched a composting program.
The Museum School
Decatur, Georgia
Parents volunteer at this charter school’s lunchroom every single day. With the help of the grant, the school planned to build a garden and participate in a local farm-to-school program.
