The Question: My kids see a traditional pediatrician, and whenever I ask him about holistic options, he dismisses me. What can I do?
Answer: It is incredibly frustrating when our beliefs about what is best for our children are dismissed. Try this strategy before you consider leaving the practice altogether: Request a meeting with the doctor without your children present. Be especially calm and mindful, and ask him to listen to your concerns without judging or immediately reacting. Express how much you respect his education and experience, and note that you are not abandoning all of conventional medicine. Instead, you would like to pursue a more integrative approach and prefer more natural choices when they’re safe and effective. Sometimes, how we handle the conversation matters more than what we say. If it doesn’t work out, then ask for recommendations from naturally- minded friends and family members.
