Here’s a girl with some serious buzz! A painful sting a few years ago prompted Mikaila Ulmer, now 9, to develop an interest in honeybees. That’s when she discovered their great importance to our ecosystem and learned that they’re declining in rapid numbers, in large part because of pesticide use. Concerned and inspired, she and her parents started BeeSweet Lemonade, selling their family drink recipe at local competitions and fairs while donating 20 percent of the proceeds to honeybee-saving nonprofits. The lemonade, which is made with wholesome ingredients like flaxseed, local honey, and homegrown mint, was so popular that it’s now stocked in stores and restaurants throughout Mikaila’s hometown of Austin, Texas.
