Expecting a Baby, Naturally

A conversation with Trista Sutter
By Susan McGinnis
Remember when ABC’s Bachelorette couple Trista and Ryan Sutter tied the knot on national television? Well, two years later, they’re expecting a baby. KIWI spoke with Trista about her plans for her pregnancy and her growing family.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Thank you! I’m in second trimester and am finally starting to feel better.
You were pretty sick for the first several months. What did you do for it?
There wasn’t much to do. I tried ginger, that didn’t work. I was told to keep eating, but I just couldn’t keep anything down, organic or not. I didn’t want to take drugs. I even tried a cd that plays music that is supposed to help. Even prenatal vitamins made me nauseous, so my doctor told me to take children’s vitamins. I’m finally getting an appetite back.
It took you nearly two years to get pregnant. How did you finally succeed?
While we were seeing a fertility specialist, OV-Watch heard about my struggles and thought their product would help. It’s a watch you wear at night. It alerts you up to four days before you ovulate so you have a better chance of getting pregnant.
Even before your pregnancy, you and Ryan were healthy eaters?
We try to eat organically. We live in Vail, so there’s no Whole Foods or natural foods store near us. I admit, before the pregnancy, I was not into fruits and veggies as much as I should have been. Now, I eat with the knowledge that I’m eating for two. I will continue to eat organic; I’m making that a priority.
And Ryan lives a healthy lifestyle?
He’s very into organic living and being extremely active. He’s always snowboarding on a mountain, biking, hiking, jogging and camping. And he’s committed to the environment. He started www.mixedmarket.com. When you buy something, part of the profit goes to support environmental causes.
Any new activities you’ll undertake to stay fit while pregnant?
I plan to start pilates soon with a neighbor who is certified in pregnancy pilates. That’ll help with the birth. I want to incorporate that into my lifestyle.
Any special plans for the birth?
I want to have the baby as naturally as possible. I have to say, I’m a huge wimp when it comes to pain, so I can’t say I won’t be begging for drugs!
Will you breastfeed?
I will try. It’s so important for the baby’s immunity, and for bonding.
And will you try to raise the baby naturally?
I will make that a priority. I may try to make my own baby food. I’m also searching for organic cotton baby clothing. We want to raise the baby naturally and organically, as well as pay attention to the environment. That’s the way we live.
