america recycles dayThe perfect day for a family recycling activity? America Recycles Day on November 15!

Created as a national initiative of the nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, America Recycles Day is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. Here’s how you and your family can be a part of it:

Attend an event. Thousands of events are taking place in communities across the country. Head to americarecyclesday.org to find an event in your area or register your own.

Find out what you can recycle. Each city has its own guidelines for what can and can’t be recycled. Knowing your city or town’s standards can help make the process easier and more efficient. Contact your public works department to find out. Then have your child help you make a chart to hang over your recycling bins to make it easier to remember.

Try an upcycling project. Upcycling is another way to reuse old or discarded items—and can be tons of fun! Encourage family members to look around the house for objects that could be turned into craft projects, whether water bottles, cans, fabric scraps, or old T-shirts.

Play “I Spy” with recyclables. Teach your children about the different objects and materials that can be recycled. Then reinforce the lessons by pointing out recyclable items and recycling bins wherever you go, whether you’re eating dinner at a restaurant or taking a walk in the park.

Take the #BeRecycled pledge. Join thousands of Americans and pledge to learn, act, and share at americarecyclesday.org/pledge. Hang your family’s pledge on your refrigerator as a reminder to recycle all year long.

This year, we invite you to show us how your family reduces, reuses, and recycles by posting and tweeting using #KIWIrecycles.
