The village of Sayulita is nestled in a gentle, palm tree-lined bay just 30 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta airport. A cultural blend of beaches, shops, restaurants, activities and smiling people make Sayulita the perfect destination for an "off-the-beaten-path" Mexico vacation.

A perfect family vacation...
By Maxine Wolf

When we first pulled into Sayulita, our first impression was, "Oh boy, what did we get ourselves into?" Only 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallerta, we felt like we had traveled into another place and time, far from the manicured resorts we were used to. The dirt roads and street-patrolling roosters faded away quickly as we entered our beachfront home for the week--Las Hamacas. This beautiful six family complex offered us most of the amenities that we desired, including daily maid service.

Our home away from home was named La Dulcina, a spectacular beachfront two-story house. Two families from our group resided comfortably on the bottom floor while our third family stayed in the house that faced the pool. Once our kids adjusted to our new housemates--the geckos--they enjoyed the hop, skip and jump from the beach to the pool. We were all pleasantly surprised by "the Muffin Lady" who appeared every morning outside of our porch with delicious homemade muffins and pastries (baked in a tin can!). "The Tamale Lady" visited us for lunch, as did the man selling fresh baked French bread. In the afternoon, a vendor sold homemade donuts and desserts. For dinner, we had our choice of many fabulous and reasonably priced restaurants in Sayulita and its neighboring towns. Several of which, we could walk to on the beach. With their own flashlights, our kids loved the walks to dinner!

We couldn't get cell phone service in the town, so the workaholics among us started to panic. However, the town of Sayulita was a short ten-minute walk and offered payphones, shopping, a pool hall, ice cream shops and even more. We ended up enjoying the calm that comes without ringing telephones. The complex had WIFI, so we could be adequately connected to the outside world when we needed it.

Additionally, there were no televisions in the resort. Guess what? No one missed it (proving we can live without TV!). The proprietors of Las Hamacas own two other beachfront resorts, equally as beautiful as Las Hamacas. Their vacation houses make ideal spots for group family vacations and wedding parties. They are priced from $1,400--$2,000 per house and accommodate six to eight people.

Sayulita is definitely a special place. Get there before the rest of the world discovers this tranquil spot where the people are nice and life is sweet. Visit www.sayulita.to for more information on Las Hamacas.
