22 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

22 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

To celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd, KIWI has put together a list of the top 22 fun ways to celebrate our planet.

  1. Find an Earth Day event in your area by visiting www.earthday.envirolink.org.
  2. Talk to your children about global warming. Pick up The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming by Laurie David and Cambria Gordon, and be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Laurie David here
  3. Wear all green or earth-friendly clothing.
  4. Read an earth-friendly book with your kids. We love Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, but be sure to visit our KIWI Bookworms page for other great literary suggestions.
  5. Plant a backyard (or rooftop) garden. See our article on gardening with children.
  6. Leave the car at home, and instead walk or take public transportation.
  7. Sign a family pledge to make every day Earth Day by recycling, conserving energy and saving water.
  8. Create crafts from recycled materials.
  9. Save electricity and play a board game, such as Let’s Save Our Earth.
  10. Visit your local zoo or botanical gardens; many of them have Earth Day events that are fun for the whole family.
  11. Teach your kids about endangered species by reading our article.
  12. Take a hike through nature and appreciate being outside.
  13. Plant a tree in your yard or through www.mokugift.com.
  14. Help save the rainforest by adopting an acre.
  15. Send an Earth Day e-card to a friend, family member or coworker.
  16. Have your child’s class decorate grocery bags with earth-inspired drawings for a local supermarket.
  17. Raise butterflies to witness one creature’s life cycle for yourself.
  18. Hold a yard sale to find good homes for your old belongings, then donate your proceeds to an environmental charity such as Healthy Child Healthy World.
  19. Create your own Earth Day cards by making your own paper.
  20. Help improve a child’s life in countries around the world by sponsor a child through World Vision
  21. Sign your child up for the Maylee OTG e-newsletter, which will teach them how to protect the planet and lead healthier lifestyles.
  22. Talk about the elections with your child and how our votes can influence the future of our planet. Visit www.grist.org to learn about your candidate’s environmental policy.
