KIWI’s Book Reviews

Double Speak
Top-notch materials for raising a bilingual child.

Helping your child learn a second language, even if you’re not fluent, has many advantages, from improving his or her overall communication skills and appreciation of other cultures to simply spending time together. These tools will encourage your child to stay tuned-in to language learning.

Animals by Premier Maldonado (Osmosis, 2006, ages 2+)

A new take on dictionaries and lift-the-flap, this bilingual (Spanish-English) book has sliding-panel windows that show the English and Spanish words with colorful illustrations. Other sliding-panel books include House and Body. Osmosis also produces additional bilingual products, such as coloring books, DVDs and place mats.

Minutka: The Bilingual Dog by Anna Mycek-Wodecki (Milet, 2007, ages 2+)

Minutka is a charming little bilingual pooch who even dreams in two languages. In this version, Minutka speaks Polish and English, although other languages are available. Milet offers a range of children’s bilingual books and dictionaries in more than 25 languages.

Hear-Say Spanish by Donald S. Rivera (Penton Overseas, 2003, ages 2+)

This vibrant book-and-audio set will have kids meowing and mooing their way to learning Spanish. The audio CD introduces the sounds of animals and musical instruments and follows it with the Spanish and English name of each one. Penton Overseas has learning tools for the whole family in many languages.

Books for Parents and Caregivers

The Bilingual Edge by Kendall King and Alison Mackey (Collins, 2007)

The authors clearly lay out strategies for teaching language, even for parents who don’t speak the language themselves. They highlight the importance of learning through reinforcement and interpersonal communication and point out that language-oriented media, toys and games are great ways to keep kids interested in learning. A must-have if you want to know why, when and how to teach your child a second language.

Fun & Games

Mudpuppy - English to Spanish Dominoes (Mudpuppy, ages 2+)

Match the lively cards, which have words and pictures on one side and words and numbers on the other. Mudpuppy also offers English-Spanish Ring Flash Cards, which are fun for kids and a joy to parents because all of the cards stay on the ring and don’t get scattered in the car or airplane.

French or Spanish Bingo (eeBoo, ages 3+)

Bingo with an international twist provides entertainment for all ages. The game comes in Spanish or French and has a handy cloth bag for the bingo caller. Eeboo carries beautifully illustrated flash cards in both languages as well. The company also features unique multicultural games and toys such as I Never Forget a Face and Friends Say Hello Puzzle.

Yumi (Language Littles, ages 3+)

The 16-inch doll Yumi speaks kid-friendly Japanese and English and comes with a translation book. Yumi is one of many Language Littles dolls that represent different tongues, including Greek, Russian, Chinese and Hebrew.
