KIWI’s Book Reviews

Green Bookworms
By Mary Talalay

Learn about the environment with these two entertaining books.

Atherton: The House of Power by Patrick Carman (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, ages 9–12)

After the earth becomes virtually uninhabitable due to pollution, humans move to a new planet called Atherton. Edgar, a preteen orphan, discovers secrets about the new world and tries to prevent its collapse. The environmental theme is subtle– letting readers absorb the message while enjoying the story.

On Meadowview Street by Henry Cole (Greenwillow Books, ages 4–8)

When Caroline moves to Meadowview Street with her family, she views no meadow! She transforms her yard into a wildlife oasis by planting trees and building a pond. With simple, charming illustrations, Cole shows the progression from manicured lawns to a neighborhood nature preserve.
