KIWI’s Book Reviews - School-Themed Books

Teachers and Homework and Tests, Oh My!
At the start of the school year, students often experience a range of emotions. These school-themed books will entertain and encourage them.

Preschool
Curious Kids Go to Preschool: Another Big Book of Words by Ingrid Godon (Atlanta, GA: Peachtree Publishers, 1996).

This is a wonderful book for young children, who are often both excited and nervous about starting school. The pages are filled with fanciful color illustrations done in pen and watercolor. They depict items and places associated with school, such as a school bus, a classroom, a backpack and a lunchbox. This book can help to reassure children about their first school experience.

Ages 6 to 8
Junie B., First Grader Toothless Wonder by Barbara Park (NY: Random House, 2003).

If you aren’t already familiar with the Junie B. series, you probably will be soon. Used by many parents to introduce their children to chapter books, these books chronicle the childhood of Junie B. Jones. In Toothless Wonder, she is the first in her class to lose a tooth, and boy, does she have questions! After following Junie B. through this story, kids are likely to want to read more of her hilarious adventures.

Ages 9 to 12
The School Story by Andrew Clements (NY: Aladdin Paperbacks, 2001).

This is a delightful story about 12-year-old Natalie, who is writing a book, and her best friend, Zoe, who helps her get it published. This is a page-turner for kids! Parents might want to read along to get some tips on how to make children into enthusiastic readers and writers.

Ages 11 to 13
A Smart Girl's Guide to Starting Middle School: Everything You Need to Know About Juggling More Homework, More Teachers, and More Friends by Julie Williams (Middleton, WI: American Girl, 2004).

An excellent resource for girls going into middle school, this book answers just about all of the questions that middle schoolers might worry about and then some. After consulting it, girls may feel more secure about such matters as lockers, note taking, new friends and the school dance.
