KIWI’s Book Reviews

Star Light, Star Bright
What’s your favorite star reading tonight?

These famous young people may sing, swing, or swim, perform roles, rolls or rock ‘n’ roll. No matter what their claim to fame, books play a starring role in their busy schedules.

Kara and Shelby Hoffman (5) are twins who played ankle-biter Sunny Baudelaire in the movie Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Now that they’re in kindergarten and reading on their own, they love snuggling up with Lettice, the Dancing Rabbit by Mandy Stanley. Their all-time favorite book is Priscilla and the Pink Planet by Nathaniel Hobbie.

Sensational siblings Alex (10) and Nat Wolff (14) are better known as the Naked Brothers Band. After producing a chart-topping CD, they’re now releasing a DVD of their hit Nickelodeon show. Alex’s top read is The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl, and he’s currently enjoying the Hardy Boys in What Happened at Midnight? by Franklin W. Nixon. Nat is a big fan of The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls and is reading The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

Ivana Hong (15) is flipping her way to the 2008 Beijing Olympics while flipping the pages of her favorite books. Ivana was on the U.S. women’s gymnastics teams that won gold medals at the 2007 World Championships and Pan American Games. “My favorite reading place is my backyard on a warm and sunny day,” says Ivana. She is currently reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, and she gives a gold medal to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor.

Nickelodeon’s hit iCarly features Nathan Kress (15) as Freddie, the webcast's technical whiz. He’s also appeared in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Drake and Josh. “In preschool, my favorite bedtime book was The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood.” As Nathan grew up, he enjoyed The Boxcar Children Mysteries by Gertrude Chandler Warner and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Now, Thr3e by Ted Dekker is top on his list. Nathan loves to read in bed every night before he goes to sleep.

Malese Jow (16) is a singer and actress who appeared in the Bratz movie, Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous and The Wizards of Waverly Place. Malese says, “I love reading on a rainy day. You have an excuse to bundle up and get lost in a book for hours. It's my favorite thing!” She’s currently reading The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan. “My special memory about reading is when I was just learning to read chapter books. It was such a rewarding feeling,” says Malese.
