My Parents Are Divorced, My Elbows Have Nicknames, and Other Facts About Me by Bill Cochran images1
Steve Bjorkman (Illustrator)
Ages 4-8
HarperCollins- June 2009

Kiwi Magazine Review:
I was a little bit skeptical about this book when I first read the title, but Ted is a winsome character whose parents happen to be divorced and he tells the matter-of-fact changes that occur because they are no longer togehter. Sprinkled with humor and a boy’s perspective, Ted manages to stay true to himself and make peace with the change in his life.

Forever Amber Brown by Paula Danziger

Scholastic, 1996

Recommended ages:6-10

Cautions: divorce

Synopsis

Just when Amber Brown thinks everything is settling down, life changes again. She’s finally used to fourth grade, her new best friend is really terrific, and her school pictures even look good enough to send to her dad in Paris. Just when Amber is used to Max being her mom’s boyfriend, he asks her to marry him. The way Amber’s life keeps changing, will she be able to remain forever Amber Brown?

Kiwi Magazine Review

Paula Danziger deftly uses Amber Brown and her sense of humor to handle the delicate subjects of divorce and remarriage with great aplomb.  Amber and her mother have a fantastic relationship and discuss openly the pros and cons of her mother remarrying, accomplished largely through Amber’s penchant for making lists.

Little, Brown, 2007

Recommended readers – 4-8

Cautions: All clear

Description from publisher:

Told from the point of view of a young child whose parents are divorced, this story follows a girl and her dog, Fred, from one parents house to the others. With a simple text and childlike language, the story expresses and addresses a childs concerns.

Kiwi Magazine Review

Fred the dog may be messy, stinky, thieving and naughty, but he is the consistent friend who stays with the young girl in this story no matter what. Divorce is a tough topic but this book manages the subject beautifully. Told from the perspective of the child about her two households, she feels more in control of her situation because her dog is always by her side.
