America’s Best Zoos by Allen Nyhuis and Jon Wassner
The Intrepid Traveler, 2008
Recommended: Adults
Cautions: All Clear

From the publisher:

Animals are hot! Animal Planet rules TV ratings. The Lion King reigns on Broadway. March of the Penguins was boffo. Polar bear cub Knut is an international celebrity. Zoos are educational, cheaper than amusement parks, fun for the whole family, and attract more visitors than spectator sports. America’s Best Zoos is a comprehensive guide to a true family entertainment bargain. Arranged geographically for touring convenience, it gives detailed descriptions of top zoos across the country.

Kiwi Magazine Review:

If you’re one of those people who absolutely must see animals on every vacation, this is the book for you.  I have always loved discovering small zoos, bird sanctuaries and other animal-related exhibits wherever I have traveled and my preschooler somehow inherited that trait.  Our “home” zoo, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, is a weekly jaunt for us, so I immediately turned to that entry in the book to make sure the authors got it right.  And, indeed, they did and I even learned a few things about ‘our’ zoo.  The book is well-organized and comprehensive, and even covers larger complexes like Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  We are giving this as a holiday gift to our animal-lover friends in addition to an adoption certificate for those gorgeous polar bears at our zoo.
