Hi friends!

Celebrate Adoption

We’re talking about adoption in this issue of KIWI. Did you know that I was adopted? I was born in China and met my family for the first time on March 30, 1999.

For me (like other adopted kids), that date is just as important as my birthday,—maybe even more so. According to ancient Chinese legend “An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle, but never break.” And it’s on that day that the thread connected me to my forever family.

Like many adoptive families, we celebrate my “Gotcha Day” (or Adoption Day) every year with our own set of traditions. We watch the video my family took in China and laugh at the same spots—like when my aunt, our videographer, set the camera down while it was on and now part of the video is of a plant! And my mom cries at the same moments—like when I’m placed in her arms for the first time. Each year, I get a small gift, such as a piece of Chinese jewelry or a dragon for my collection. And then we read some of my most favorite books on adoption, like I Love You Like Crazy Cakes by Rose A. Lewis.

I’d like to hear about your family’s special traditions—email me at [email protected]!
