On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan roared through the Philippines, affecting over 9 million people and displacing at least 600,000.

According to reports from NBC News, the super typhoon “destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of structures in its path as it tore into the coastal provinces of Leyte and Samar.” Haiyan was also one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, with winds at 190 miles an hour and storm surges reaching up to 20 feet.
