medication disposalTrace amounts of prescription drugs continue to show up in our water sources, according to the EPA. Protect your family and our world by following these steps to discard your leftover medications:

  1. Check the labels. Some drugs are incredibly potent and the labels include specific disposal instructions. When in doubt, talk to your pharmacist.
  1. Find a give-back program. Many city and county governments provide ways for people to dispose of prescriptions. Check disposemymeds.org for drop sites in your area.
  1. Trash them. This should be your last resort. Take the medicine out of the bottle or package and mix it with coffee grounds or cat litter. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid and add the empty Rx packaging with your personal information scratched off. Seal the container and throw it away.
