room decorMy daughter wants to put her stamp on her bedroom, but I’m trying to avoid the celebrity-poster craze. What are some ideas we’ll both be happy with?

Here, three ideas for room decor that kids and parents will like.

FRAME SOME INSPIRATION

Gather several frames of different sizes and styles from around your home, or purchase them at garage sales. Together with your child, paint them in solid colors (metallics are fun!) or decorate with stripes or polka dots. Then go online and find inspirational quotes to fill each frame. (Some favorites: “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” “Be your own kind of beautiful,” “Imagine” … you get the idea!) Write the quotes on patterned scrap paper, place them in the frames, and hang them together in an arrangement on the wall.

ADD SELFIES TO A SHELF

Get those photos out of her smartphone! Decorate a shelf or bookcase with “selfies” of your daughter and her best friends. Cut them out into different-size squares and decoupage them onto the wood using nontoxic glue. Depending on the style you’re going for, you can overlap them collage-style or uniformly lay them out.

HANG UP HOPE

In Asian cultures, the crane represents good fortune and is a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times. Have a family folding party and create dozens of colorful origami cranes (see origami-instructions.com for a how-to). Then, using a needle and thread, hang them on a string with 2 to 3 inches between each one. Tack them to the ceiling to create a waterfall of flying colored cranes. (Traditionally, it was believed that if you folded 1,000 origami cranes, your wish would come true. Happy wishing!)

Traci Paige Johnson, a mom of three, is the co-creator of Blue’s Clues and Super WHY! (and the voice of Blue’s bark). She also launched a children’s media company, yummico, making “delicious media that’s good and good for you.”
