The Kiwi Crusaders™ Award was established to recognize the schools and school systems that have made a commitment to serving their students healthier, more sustainable food. Our congratulations go to:
McNeil Child Development Center (preschool) in Pennsylvania Urged by parents’ requests to see healthier foods in their children’s school, McNeil teamed up with its food vendor, Aramark, to provide fresher, minimally processeed, organic foods for their students. The kids enjoy trying the new foods, and a toy puppet named Chef Combo helps to teach them the connection between food and health.
Berkeley Unified School District (public) in California Sustainability is a dominant factor in determining this school’s food choices, with local, regional and organic food taking priority whenever possible. Students are urged to participate in the food preparation process by managing gardens throughout the school district, and a database tracks the nutritional value and cost of each recipe produced in the kitchen.
Calhoun School (private) in New York An in-house executive chef prepares meals for these students using only natural, seasonal ingredients. The program also includes interactive educational lessons designed to teach kids about food, nutrition, healthy living, and sustainability.
