Earth Hour
Showing some love for the planet can be as simple as flipping a switch. |

| At 8pm on March 29th, millions of people and businesses across the world will turn off their lights for 60 minutes in support of Earth Hour. The campaign started last year in Australia, where 2.2 million people and 2,100 corporations participated. This year, Earth Hour goes global in an attempt to prove that, if the world comes together, we can all make a difference in the fight against global warming.
Of course, after you flip the switch in support of our planet, the next logical question becomes, “What do I do when my lights are out for an hour?” You can try going colonial with candles. Or step outside to see if the stars look clearer with less light pollution. Or just consider this a great excuse for a nap—anything to help the planet!

The Long Beach Airport, along with EcoMedia (an environmental media company), has recently announced the installation of a solar panel near one of its baggage claim areas. The project will not only provide an alternative energy source for the airport, but also help educate passengers about environmental and energy issues. The Long Beach Airport hopes to develop even more green projects in the future, so if you’re in the Los Angeles area, stop by to show your support! |

| Mary Talalay has become something of a hero over here at KIWI. Not only has this mommy decided to forego her love of meat in an effort to decrease her carbon footprint, but she’s also agreed to keep a daily log of her experiences for our (and your) reading pleasure. Look for her hilarious, insightful entries on KIWI’s blog every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In the meantime, here’s a small taste to whet your appetite:
Going vegan isn’t a delayed New Year’s resolution (although I have several of those). I was not inspired by some bug-eating reality show. I don’t intend to be a top model, idol, big loser, survivor, bachelorette, geek-loving beauty or a home-improvement show host. Just a vegan for as long as I can be-gan.
Check out Mary's vegan adventures starting March 19th.
