Meet our Moms of the Revolution! top
KIWI Magazine and Revolution Foods are proud to announce the winners of our Moms of the Revolution contest, which recognizes moms who have improved school nutrition and healthy eating for kids in their communities.

The grand-prize winner was Amie Hamlin of Ithaca, New York, who has made extraordinary strides as executive director at the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food, which seeks to encourage healthy students and bring nutritious, plant-based entrées to schools in New York.

Our runners-up include:

  • Liz Snyder of Sunnyvale, California, who built a sustainable, educational farm on a local middle school campus
  • Cynthia Walters of Powell, Ohio, who installed a two-acre organic garden and formed a comprehensive wellness team at the middle school where she teaches art
  • Dawn Gullusci of Bethel, Connecticut, who created an after-school cooking class to teach kids how to prepare healthier foods from scratch
  • Dawn Walker of Stevenson Ranch, California, who opened a healthy school snack shack and taught seventh-graders how to run it.

SIGG to Replace Bottles Produced with BPA top
After the recent revelation that SIGG was selling aluminum bottles with liners produced with Bisphenol-A (bottles made before August 2008 contained the risky chemical), the company is trying to make amends. SIGG’s president Steve Wasik offered an apology, and SIGG is offering a voluntary exchange program until October 31. If you send in your old bottle, the company will send you a new, BPA-free replacement—for (almost) free. You’ll have to cover the shipping cost, but they’ll provide you with a shipping label and detailed instructions about your exchange. Visit mysigg.com for more.

Tip
Dealing with Back-to-School Anxiety top
For some kids, starting the new school year can be downright terrifying. Some ideas to ease the transition:
  • Pack a lunch full of her (healthy) favorites. If she's having a rough day, it’ll boost her spirits—and if she's doing fine, it’ll give her some great lunch box items to swap with her new friends.
  • Dedicate 10 minutes of your morning routine to playing your kid’s favorite game. It’ll help her relax and start the day off with a positive attitude.
  • Get to know the kids (and their parents) in your child’s class. Arrange some weekend play dates so they can all get to know each other outside of the classroom.

MaraNatha Almond Butter top
Looking for an alternative to peanut butter that you can send in your child’s lunch box? MaraNatha Almond Butter (takeahealthybite.com) is yummy and it comes in both creamy and crunchy varieties. Try serving it on toasted whole grain bread with apple slices and a dash of cinnamon, or use it to put a twist on the standard PB&J. ($8.50, maranathanutbutters.com)
