How to set up a backyard movie theater |
top |
 |
|
No homework and later bedtimes make summer perfect for family movie nights—outside! Bring the big screen to your backyard to watch hand-picked films, munch on homemade snacks, and cozy up under the stars. Just don't forget the bug spray!
What you’ll need
- DVD player
- Speakers
- Extension cords and surge protector
- Screen Project directly onto the side of white or gray houses, or create a screen by using a bungee cord to hang a white sheet or canvas tarp between two trees or windows. Screens can be as large or small as you want, but try to keep the width to height ratio about 2:1 so your DVD image doesn’t get distorted.
- An LCD projector Models range in price from $250 to $800, but you don’t have to buy new (or at all!). Look into borrowing one from your office, child’s school, or local community center; or search for deals on eBay and Craigslist.
Setting it all up
Your DVD player should output video to your projector and output audio to your speakers (need help? Check out this diagram and cable guide from Projector People). If your projector has the capability, enter the dimensions of the image you want to project, otherwise just move the projector closer to or further away from the screen to change dimensions. Wait until after sunset to make final image adjustments, then sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

DIY summer camp stationary |
top |
 |
|
Sleepaway camp can be scary for first timers, but a letter from mom and dad can do wonders to ease homesickness. Before your child leaves, work together to make a set of customized stationary by decorating eco-friendly paper and envelopes with stickers, magazine or comic book clippings, or homemade stamps made of cut-up sponges or carved potatoes. Let him know you’ll write often—and pack some pre-stamped and –addressed envelopes in his duffel so he can send you letters, too.
