Exercise Every Day

The challenge:  Exercise every day

Brandy and Al Miracle Preston of Troy Michigan and Preston, 12; Aleric, 9; Dominic, 7; Marcus, 4; and Maximus, 1

Why they did it

The Miracles took on the KIWI challenge this past summer during a heat wave, which meant the boys were spending less time running around outside and more time on the couch playing video games. Plus, Brandy still had some baby weight she wanted to shed.

In the beginning…

The Miracles kicked things off with gusto. “The kids thought it was cool to be doing this for a magazine, and they loved the idea of us doing activities with them,” says Brandy. Al and the boys found they had no problem fitting in exercise: Al had access to a gym at work, and the kids spent time swimming and jumping on the trampoline at Grandma’s. Brandy had a harder time—she suffers from lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and as having a flare-up that made physical activity difficult—but she did manage to squeeze in walks during her lunch breaks.

Halfway through…

Al and the boys often got more than 60 minutes of daily exercise, and did a lot of it together in the evenings with biking and playing tag.

Challenge complete!

By choosing activities they each enjoyed, like running and playing football, everyone was able to get in an hour of exercise most days. “We’re definitely going to try to keep it going, especially doing exercise together,” says Brandy. “When it gets cold, we’re going to simply move our activities inside.”

Despite hectic school and work schedules, everyone continues to get some daily exercise. The kids walk to school, get plenty of run-around time during recess and gym class, and play together more often on the weekends. Al still goes to the gym at work, and Brandy joined a gym as well to make sure she’d stay active when the weather got colder. “As moms, we tend to put everyone else before ourselves, but exercising is helping me realize it’s important to put my health first,” Brandy says. The daily workouts help boost her energy and she even lost 35 pounds! As for other families looking to up their exercise, Brandy’s advice is simple—just get started. “It’s so tempting to veg out, but we found that once we got active, we felt great, which motivates us to keep it up!”
