Answer: The good news is that more pediatricians are interested and trained in a holistic approach than ever before. Holistic pediatricians practice integrative medicine by combining safe and effective complementary therapies, like homeopathy and yoga, with conventional medical practices. While there are no specific guidelines for holistic pediatricians, a few key questions may be all you need to gauge how holistic your prospective doctor is:

“Do you collaborate with practitioners like chiropractors or acupuncturists?” A willingness to work with you and members of your unconventional health care team is the mark of a holistic physician.
“How would you treat my child’s coughs and colds?” You’re looking for an individualized approach that uses the least invasive and natural therapies prior to prescribing antibiotics, if appropriate.
“How do you feel about organic foods?” An interest in nutrition and support of organic farming processes is a good indication of how someone feels about the environment, and it shows an interest in the environment’s effect on health.
“Should I be worried about BPA and plastics?” Holistic pediatricians should display knowledge and concern about endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as BPA.
