How can I make my older child feel special now that there’s a new baby at home?
Make the big sibling the resident photographer and let him create the baby’s first ABC book. Have him take photographs of family, friends, and signature items in the house and place them next to their respective letter (like C for cat and D for Dad). You can print out the pictures at home and insert them in a scrapbook with written letters, or create a book online.
Break open the art box and let your older child create a sign to welcome the new baby. She can bring it to the hospital when she visits for the first time, and then you can hang it in the baby’s nursery once everyone is home. Or, she can make a larger sign to hang outside the house and announce the baby’s arrival to the whole neighborhood!
A MEANINGFUL MEMENTO
Give the older sibling the honor of going to the toy store and picking (and naming) the baby’s “lovey.” Big bro then gets to place the stuffed animal, blanket, or doll in the baby’s room. You can also let him pick the signature lullaby that you’ll sing to the baby at bedtime. Help him remember some of his favorites by singing them together—or make up a new one.
