A Financial Resource for Women

Finances are not a strong suit for many. If you’ve ever struggled with them or wanted to learn more about how to better your financial standing, there are plenty of resources out there to help. Jen Hemphill’s Her Money Matters: The Missing Truths from Traditional Money Advice falls into this category but also stands out from the other options.

In her book, she delves into how your lifetime experiences influence your view on money. Hemphill also explores how our money stories shape us.

“Although the individual’s money story is certainly an influence on these events happening, it is not typically the focus of the story. The focus usually is what happened and how it happened. We don’t often peel back the layers of their money story to discover how their upbringing and the resulting money mindset had to do with the particular financial event.” – Jen Hemphill, excerpt from Her Money Matters

This book goes beyond the conventional financial wisdom. Hemphill tailors it all with a family and feminine mindset to an audience that is sometimes forgotten in the financial world. Especially valuable is her openness to share her lessons she’s learned along the way. Throughout the book, Hemphill gives us a view of how her money story came to be growing up in Columbia.

We had the opportunity to learn from Hemphill in the second season of our Raising Healthy Families podcast about how to teach your kids financial literacy. She also spoke at last year’s Virtual WOW Summit about ditching the overwhelm and taking control of your family finances. Throughout all of her teachings and discussions, she is genuine, caring, and never shames her audience. I particularly like this book for how introspective it asks you to be while giving you the chance to work through your money mindsets at the end of each chapter.
