Make Homemade Clay

Watch your child’s creativity take shape with homemade clay! Allyson Zea, the mom behind family blog domesticsuperhero.com, shares her DIY recipe:

  • Mix 1 cup of flour, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar, and 1∕3 cup of salt together in a pot. Add 1 cup of water and 1 Tablespoon of vegetable oil and cook over medium heat, stirring.
  • After about two minutes, when batter starts to thin and turn to a gel, add a few drops of natural food coloring. (We like the Color Garden dyes, starting at $7 each.)
  • Keep stirring until the clay gets doughy and dry, another two minutes. Remove from the pot and cool on parchment paper for 30 minutes. Knead the dough and you’re ready to play!
