The Power of Flowers

KIWI magazine

Last summer, when making a delivery for Random Acts of Flowers, the Tennessee-based nonprofit he started, Larsen Jay brought a bouquet of flowers to a 94-year-old woman in the hospital. She told Jay she’d never gotten roses from a man before. “She’s crying and I’m crying, ” says Jay. “We just did that with trash.”

The trash: flowers (like from weddings or supermarkets) that would usually be thrown out. The arrangements are turned into new bouquets and delivered to patients in hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes—and the group hopes to expand to more cities soon. Inspired? Bring a bouquet to a local nursing home, and visit randomactsofflowers.org to learn more or donate.
